How to protect a PDF

1. Drop the PDF. 2. Type a password and the same password again. 3. Press “Protect PDF” and download. Store the password somewhere you will find it: GustKit does not keep a copy.

What this lock does

The file is encrypted with the PDF standard, so Preview, Chrome, Acrobat and other readers ask for the password before showing the pages. Someone who has the password can open, copy and print. This does not sign the document and it cannot lock a PDF that is already encrypted. Unlock that file first.

How to lock a PDF you can still open

1. Pick a password you can store somewhere else. GustKit does not keep a copy. 2. Type it twice. 3. Download the protected file and open it once before you delete the original. 4. Send the password in a different channel from the file.

The lock is standard PDF encryption. Preview, Chrome and Acrobat will ask for it. It does not sign the document. A file that is already encrypted must be unlocked before you can set a new password.

Frequently asked questions

Do you store my password?

No. It is used in this tab to encrypt the file and then it is gone. GustKit has no account and no copy of your PDF.

What if I forget the password?

There is no recovery. Pick a password you can remember or save, then download the protected file.

Can I protect a PDF that already has a password?

Not directly. Remove the current password with Unlock PDF, then protect it again with the new one.

What if I forget the password?

GustKit cannot recover it. There is no account and no copy of the password on a server.

Does this stop someone from printing?

No. Whoever knows the password can open, copy and print. The lock is about opening the file.
