Convert a GIF to MP4 without uploading it

Drop a GIF and download an MP4. The animation is encoded in this browser with FFmpeg. Sites and chats that reject GIF will usually take the video.

Your file never leaves your device. Processed locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

The animation is kept and saved as an MP4. The GIF is not uploaded.

How to convert GIF to MP4

1. Drop one GIF. Other files are refused. 2. Press “Convert to MP4”. 3. Download the video and play it once before you send it.

The first visit also loads FFmpeg. Later visits reuse the browser cache. A short GIF usually finishes in a few seconds after that.

Why MP4 instead of GIF

An MP4 of the same animation is often much smaller, and many forms accept video but not GIF. GustKit encodes H.264 with even width and height so common players can open it. There is no audio track, because a GIF does not have one.

The other direction

To make a GIF from a video, use Video to GIF. To cut a video first, use Trim video. This page only accepts a file that is already a GIF.

How to check the MP4 before you post it

1. Play the download from the start and from near the end. 2. If the GIF was huge, expect the MP4 to be smaller, not identical in every pixel. 3. Send the MP4 when the form asked for a video.

A one-frame GIF still becomes an MP4. It will look like a still picture that is a video file. There is no soundtrack to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Will the animation stay?

Yes. The frames are encoded into the MP4. A one-frame GIF becomes a very short video.

Why is there no sound?

GIF has no soundtrack. The MP4 is silent on purpose.

Can I convert several GIFs at once?

This page takes one GIF at a time. Download it, then drop the next file.

Is the GIF uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs in this tab.

Can I turn the MP4 back into a GIF here?

Not on this page. Open Video to GIF and drop the video there if you need a GIF again.

Why does a short GIF still pause?

The first run downloads FFmpeg. After that, encoding a short animation is usually quick.
