The picture fades, and the soundtrack fades with it when there is one. Clips up to 60 seconds. A longer fade is shortened.

How to fade a video

1. Drop a short video. Pictures and audio-only files are refused. 2. Leave 1 second on both sides, or set one side to None. 3. Press “Fade video” and watch the first second and the last second of the download.

FFmpeg uses the fade filter on the picture and afade on the soundtrack. The fade-out starts near the end, using the length read from the file. A fade longer than the clip is shortened. This page does not reverse the frames to guess an unknown ending.

Fade audio is a different page

Fade audio softens a sound file and leaves the picture out. This page keeps the video and fades the image with the sound. Trim video is the page that also cuts the timeline.

The clip stays in this tab

The whole short clip is re-encoded here, so long movies are refused. The first visit downloads FFmpeg. Nothing is uploaded.

How to see the fade before you replace the clip

1. Watch the first second of the download. It should come up from black. 2. Skip to the last second. It should fall to black, and the sound should fall with it. 3. If the middle looks different, that is the re-encode. Keep the original until the edges look right.

None on one side leaves that edge as it was. A fade longer than the clip is shortened. Fade audio is the page for a sound file. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fade only the opening?

Yes. Set Fade out to None and leave Fade in at 1, 2 or 3 seconds.

Will a long movie fade?

No. The whole clip is re-encoded, so only clips under the limit on the page are accepted. Trim first.

Does a silent video still fade?

Yes. The picture fades. If there is no soundtrack, GustKit retries with the picture filter only.

Is the video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs in this tab.

The end does not fade. What happened?

Fade out was None, or the length of the file could not be read. Set Fade out to 1 second and run again.

Why was a one minute clip refused?

Fade re-encodes every frame in this tab. Trim the clip under the limit shown on the page, then fade that piece.
