This page accepts MP4 and WebM and saves a GIF. MOV and MKV stay on Video to GIF. The clip is not uploaded.

Drop an MP4 or WebM, choose the moment and the size, and download a GIF. This page is Video to GIF with the input locked to those two types.

How to convert MP4 to GIF

1. Drop one MP4 or WebM. A WAV, a MOV or a photo is refused here. 2. Set the start if the GIF should begin later than 0:00. 3. Leave the length at 5 seconds, or type a shorter one. The page stops at the limit shown next to the field. 4. Leave 480 px and 12 frames per second, or pick a smaller width when the file must be lighter. 5. Press “Create GIF” and wait for the download.

FFmpeg, compiled to WebAssembly, samples the frames, builds a palette for the clip and dithers the result. The first visit downloads that engine. Later visits reuse the browser cache.

Same GIF builder, a shorter list of files

Video to GIF accepts MOV and MKV as well. This address is for people who already know the file is MP4 or WebM, which is what phones and screen recorders usually save. A WebM is accepted. It is re encoded into a GIF, so the download is not a WebM.

GIF is an old format and grows fast. Three to six seconds at 480 px and 12 fps is a practical start. There is no audio in a GIF.

The clip stays in this tab

Encoding uses one CPU thread, so a few seconds of video can take longer than they play. Leave the tab open until the download appears. GustKit does not fetch a video from a link. Close the tab and the file is gone.

How to check the GIF

1. Open the download. It should loop and it should have no sound. 2. The first frames should match the start time you set. 3. If a MOV was accepted, you opened Video to GIF.

Video to GIF accepts more containers. This page runs the same FFmpeg palette and only reads MP4 and WebM. Nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

The download starts with a GIF header and it loops. Did it work?

Yes. The palette was built from the frames you asked for. GIF has no soundtrack, so silence in the download is expected.

Why is a MOV refused?

This page reads MP4 and WebM only. Open Video to GIF for MOV, MKV and the other types that page accepts.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to the limit shown next to the length field. A longer GIF becomes huge, so a short MP4 is a better file for a long clip.

Is the video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs in this tab.

The GIF loops and the soundtrack is gone. Did it work?

Yes. GIF has no audio. The frames come from the MP4 or WebM you dropped.

Can I turn the MP4 into a GIF and also keep an MP3 of the sound in one step?

No. Make the GIF here, or open Video to MP3 on the original.
